Raw Food Diet

The raw food diet is basically as simple as what it sounds like. You eat all of your food raw, specifically no higher than a temperature of 115 degrees Fahrenheit. Proponents of this lifestyle believe that the heat from cooking destroys some or all of the nutrients of the food, and therefore limits the health benefits that you are actually getting. This lifestyle incorporates a lot of followers that adapt to a plant-based lifestyle, consuming fresh fruits and vegetables and nuts and seeds.

Keto Diet

The premise of the keto diet is how you fuel your body. Typically, your body runs off of glucose that gets converted and stored when not in use. The keto diet changes that concept by training your body to run off of fat instead. The way you accomplish this is by severely limiting your carbohydrate intake, keeping a moderate protein intake, and adjusting your fat intake as you lose weight. If you have a lot of weight to lose, then your body can use your existing fat for energy and you can get your calories from a different source. It's important to note that this diet is not just eating bacon to lose weight. You still need to include plenty of greens and a variety of foods in order to get the appropriate vitamins and nutrients.


Whole30 centers on avoiding processed foods or ones with added sugars, preservatives, and dyes. You also strive to eliminate things like alcohol, dairy, and soy products. You include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables still, but this differs from the raw diet in that people who eat whole30 heat their foods. This lifestyle may also be called eating clean. One reason people follow this is that it is thought that the modern processing of food can contribute to a long list of health conditions, like chronic inflammation and hormone imbalances.

Alkaline Diet

The alkaline plan is an interesting one. It focuses on replacing the acidic foods in your diet with ones that are more alkaline in order to help regulate your body's internal pH system. The idea is that doing this can help prevent many diseases, including cancer. Foods that are acidic include meats, eggs, dairy, alcohol, and grains. Foods that are more alkaline, and that is recommended you include in your diet, are fruits and vegetables, beans, and seeds and nuts.

Dukan Diet

The Dukan diet is a version of the low carb diet and has four different stages included. During the first stage, you eat lots of pure protein foods and majorly increase your water intake. Stage two is where you are allowed to add a few low carb vegetables, but maintain the high protein level. This stage continues until you hit your goal weight. From there you head into stages three and four, which are considered the maintenance stages. Here is where you slowly add in some fruits, cheese, and starchy vegetables. This plan also encourages plenty of exercise. In theory, this plan may sound great, but it can be difficult for a lot of people to meet the high protein goals, especially those who are opposed to eating meat for various reasons.


As you can see, there is a wide variety of popular diet plans. They range from considering the pH of your food to adjusting your macros and including a higher protein intake. Each plan has its own positives and negatives, and you are the only one who can decide which will work within your budget and lifestyle. Changes to the food you eat are easiest done if you take it one step at a time rather than diving in head first. Lastly, make sure you clear any diet changes with your doctor first to ensure it won't interact with any medications or health conditions. It also wouldn't be a bad idea to discuss the idea with a nutritionist to make sure your body stays well-nourished throughout the process.
